This medium-sized eagle measures about 62–67 cm in length, with a wingspan of 166–188 cm. It has broad wings, a relatively short tail, and a pale underside with fine streaks. The head is large and rounded, with piercing yellow eyes that give it a fierce expression. Unlike many other eagles, its legs are unfeathered and covered with tough scales—an adaptation to protect against snake bites.

The Short-toed Snake-Eagle prefers open country, scrublands, and forest edges, where snakes and lizards are abundant. In India, it is found across the plains, foothills, and semi-arid regions. It is a migratory species in northern latitudes but resident in much of South Asia.

True to its Hindi name साँपमार (“snake killer”), this eagle feeds primarily on snakes, including venomous species, as well as lizards and small mammals. It hunts by soaring at great heights, hovering briefly, and then swooping down with precision. Its strong talons and scaly legs allow it to subdue dangerous prey safely. When perched, its wing tips often reach the tail end, giving it a distinctive silhouette.
