Standing up to 1.8 meters tall, the Sarus Crane is easily recognized by its grey plumage, long legs, and the striking red head and upper neck that give rise to the name रक्तमस्तक (red-headed). Its wings are broad, and in flight, the bird appears majestic, gliding gracefully over wetlands and fields.

The Sarus Crane is widely distributed across northern and central India, as well as parts of Southeast Asia and Australia. It thrives in wetlands, marshes, and agricultural fields, often seen in pairs or small family groups. In Uttar Pradesh, where it is the state bird, the Sarus is a familiar sight in paddy fields and village ponds.

Known for its lifelong pair bonds, the Sarus Crane is a symbol of love and devotion. Pairs are often seen performing synchronized dances, bowing, and leaping together. Their loud, trumpeting calls echo across the countryside, adding to their dramatic presence. They feed on grains, insects, aquatic plants, and small vertebrates, making them an integral part of the rural ecosystem.

In Indian folklore, the Sarus is admired for its loyalty. Stories often describe how one partner grieves deeply if the other dies, reinforcing its image as a bird of eternal companionship. Names like सारस and सरहंस are ancient, while नीलांग highlights its bluish-grey body.
