The Verditer Flycatcher (Eumyias thalassinus), locally known as मोरगला पतेना, नीलांग, मोरकंठी लिटकुरी, and नीली टिर टिरी, is one of the most striking small birds of the Himalayas and adjoining regions.

The Verditer Flycatcher is instantly recognizable by its brilliant turquoise-blue plumage, a shade so vivid that it seems to glow against the greenery of forests. Adult males are an intense copper-sulphate blue all over, except for a black patch between the eyes and bill base and a slightly grey vent. Females and juveniles are paler, with duller blue tones and greyer underparts.

This species is widely found from the Himalayas through Southeast Asia to Sumatra, thriving in lowland and hill forests, forest edges, and wooded valleys In India, it is a familiar sight in the Himalayan foothills, often perched upright on exposed branches where its dazzling color makes it easy to spot.

True to its name, the Verditer Flycatcher is an agile insect-hunter. It sallies out from perches to catch flying insects mid-air, returning to the same spot with characteristic precision. Its song is a high, undulating series of burry or trilled notes, while its most common call is a sharp “wheet!”.

The bird’s local names—मोरगला पतेना, नीलांग, मोरकंठी लिटकुरी, and नीली टिर टिरी—reflect its popularity and the admiration it enjoys among communities living in the Himalayan belt. Its radiant plumage has long been associated with beauty and joy in local folklore.

Common Kingfisher छोटा किलकिला, राम चिरैया, शरीफन, निता मछराला  (Alcedo atthis)  RSPB Rye Meads August 2022 In 2014, it was the first time I saw and photographed Common Kingfisher  छोटा किलकिला, राम चिरैया, शरीफन, निता मछराला  (Alcedo atthis)   in Jabalpur, India. It was an experience on its own. I was sitting with my dad by the side of a small lake literally in front of our home talking about rubbish being dumped in the water bodies all over Jabalpur. Once renowned for its water bodies, the only name of those remain postal addresses. I had my camera with me because my dad wanted me to click a photo of him with his friend. All of a sudden we saw a bird diving in, a colorful one. It was Common Kingfisher and it flew and perched literally 5 meters from me.
