This delicate flycatcher measures about 12–13 cm in length. Males in breeding plumage display a bright orange-red throat, contrasting with their brown upperparts and whitish underparts. Females and non-breeding males are more subdued, with a pale throat and overall brownish tones. A key field mark is the tail pattern—dark in the center with white edges—that flicks characteristically when perched.

The Taiga Flycatcher breeds in the taiga forests of Siberia and migrates south to spend winters in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Southeast Asia. In India, it is commonly seen in gardens, wooded areas, scrublands, and forest edges, especially during the winter months.
True to its name, the flycatcher is an agile insect hunter. It perches quietly on low branches, darting out to snatch insects mid-air before returning to its perch. Its call is soft and unobtrusive, making it less conspicuous than other flycatchers. Despite its quiet nature, its sudden flights and tail flicks make it a joy to observe.
The Hindi names लाल-गला फीतपकड़ and लाल-गला पकड़ directly describe its most striking feature—the red throat. Birdwatchers in India often look forward to spotting this winter visitor, as it adds diversity to the seasonal avifauna.
The Taiga Flycatcher may be small and subtle, but its migratory journey from Siberia to India and its vivid throat patch make it a remarkable bird. Observing one perched quietly in a garden or woodland is a reminder of the incredible distances migratory birds travel each year.
