great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) is a medium-sized woodpecker with pied black and white plumage, a red patch on the lower belly. The male has a distinctive red patch on the back of the head and young birds have a red crown. It has a bouncing flight and spends most of its time clinging to tree trunks and branches, often trying to hide on the side away from the observer. Birds Around Me 0173 - Eurasian nuthatch (Sitta europaea)

There are around 2 dozen species of nuthatches all over the world and is  one of the birds with the widest distribution from America to Europe to Japan.  The name nuthatch suggests the way it hacks the nut, by hammering after jamming into a crevice.  Eurasian  Nuthatch  (Sitta Europaea)  like other nuthatches  moves down (and up as well), u nlike the Treecreeper, which only moves up the trunk of a tree. Eurasian Nuthatch is witnessing growth in the UK, one of the reasons seems to increase in the use of bird feeders and the availability of food in the gardens.
