Lemsford Springs, a spring-fed lagoon, by Lemsford Village, Welwyn Garden City, is a small reserve perfect for wading birds. The reserve is about 4.5-5 hectares and has a few habitats, shallow lagoons, marsh, woodland, hedgerow, etc. Winter is the ideal time for birdwatching here, as it does not freeze in the cold. Little Grebe पनडुब्बी, पांतिरी, डूबडुबी, चरुका (Tachybaptus ruficollis) is a drab-colored plump little swimming bird with silky underparts, short pointed bill, and no tail. In breeding plumage the head and neck become dark brown and chestnut and the swollen yellow gape. It is seen on a pond, village tank, and jheel swimming about like a miniature duck and diving like Little Cormorant. The birds were often seen in twos or threes but congregations of 50 and more could be seen on larger water bodies.  Little Grebe पनडुब्बी, पांतिरी, डूबडुबी, चरुका (Tachybaptus ruficollis) are astonishing divers. It is said, if fired at by s shotgun it will vanish underwater before the charge reaches it. Little Cormorant (Microcarbo niger) छोटा पनकौवा, slightly larger than the Jungle Crow, is a shabby looing glistering black duck-like water bird with logins stiff tail and slender compressed bill. The bill is sharply hooked at the tip. Tricolored munia नकलनौर, तेलिए मुनिया, सिंगबाज़, पोरा मुनिया, तिरंगा मुनिया (Lonchura malacca), also known as Black-headed munia, are small gregarious bird which feeds mainly on grain and other seeds. It inhabits wet grassland habitats. The adults are black from the head to the throat and breast, and from the belly to under tail coverts and thighs. The Red avadavat or Red Munia (Estrilda amandava) लाल मुनिया is smaller than a sparrow. The male is crimson with sparse white spots. In non-breeding plumage the male and female are alike: brownish, sparse white spots, and only bill and rump crimson. The tail is rounded, not pointed as in  0040. Scaly-breasted Munia (Lonchura punctulata) . It is a typical munia in habits and behavior, keeping in flocks in tall flowering grass and reeds in damp localities such as the margins of the jheels.
