Birds Around Me 0206 - Asian koel कोयल, कोकिला (Eudynamys scolopaceus)
Asian koel कोयल, कोकिला (Eudynamys scolopaceus) is a bird of poets, authors, painters, dramatists, storytellers, myths, legends, and the list goes on and on. You would more often hear its song than see it, especially during the monsoon months, go silent during winter months. The males will sing or call under the cover of thick trees, making it difficult to see. Females have no song. They are entirely arboreal and never descend to the ground. I have only managed to photograph males a couple of times and that too is not satisfactory output. The quest is on.
The male Asian koel कोयल, कोकिला (Eudynamys scolopaceus) is glistering metallic black all over, with striking yellowish green bill and crimson or blood-red eyes. The female is brown, spotted, and barred with white. Like other parasitic cuckoos, the Koel builds no nest of its own but deposits its eggs in crows' nests leaving them to be hatched, and the young to be reared by the foster parents. The eggs, which may be distributed over several nests.
