The White-naped Woodpecker, known in Hindi as स्वेत-डब कठफोड़वा, सफ़ेद-कंठ कठफोड़वा, is one of the most striking and uncommon woodpeckers of the Indian subcontinent. Its bold plumage and powerful drumming make it a memorable bird for anyone lucky enough to spot it.

This large woodpecker is instantly recognizable by its golden-yellow back, black rump, and the distinctive white nape and throat that give the species its name. Males sport a bright red crown, while females have a yellow crown, making sexual dimorphism easy to observe. Its strong bill and stiff tail feathers are perfectly adapted for clinging to tree trunks and chiseling into wood.

Endemic to the Indian subcontinent, the White-naped Woodpecker is found in open forests, scrublands, semi-arid regions, and agricultural landscapes. It prefers areas with scattered trees rather than dense forests, often inhabiting rocky terrain and dry deciduous woodlands. Though not as common as other woodpeckers, it can be seen in parts of central and southern India.

Like other woodpeckers, the White-naped Woodpecker feeds on insects, larvae, and grubs hidden beneath bark. It uses its powerful bill to drum on tree trunks, both to forage and to communicate. Its drumming is loud and resonant, echoing across its habitat. The species nests in tree cavities, laying one or two white eggs, with both parents sharing incubation and chick-rearing duties.
