The Yellow-footed Green Pigeon, known in Hindi as हरियल or पीली टांग का हरियल, is one of the most striking pigeons of the Indian subcontinent. With its vibrant green plumage and distinctive yellow legs, this bird is a delight to spot in forests, groves, and fruiting trees.

This medium-sized pigeon measures about 30–33 cm in length. Its body is a rich green, blending beautifully with foliage, while the head is slightly greyish. A soft pinkish patch on the shoulder adds contrast, and the bright yellow legs make it unmistakable. Its gentle, mellow calls further distinguish it from other pigeons and doves.  

The Yellow-footed Green Pigeon is widely distributed across India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, thriving in forests, orchards, and wooded areas. It is especially common in central and western India, where fruiting fig trees attract large flocks. In Maharashtra, it holds special pride as the state bird, popularly called Hariyal.  

These pigeons are highly social, often seen in flocks feeding on fruits, particularly figs. Their flight is swift and direct, and they are known for their soft, pleasant calls that echo through groves. They play an important ecological role as seed dispersers, helping maintain forest health.  

The Hindi names हरियल and पीली टांग का हरियल highlight the bird’s green plumage and yellow legs. In rural folklore, the Hariyal is admired for its beauty and is considered a symbol of abundance, as it is often found around fruiting trees.

Common Kingfisher छोटा किलकिला, राम चिरैया, शरीफन, निता मछराला  (Alcedo atthis)  RSPB Rye Meads August 2022 In 2014, it was the first time I saw and photographed Common Kingfisher  छोटा किलकिला, राम चिरैया, शरीफन, निता मछराला  (Alcedo atthis)   in Jabalpur, India. It was an experience on its own. I was sitting with my dad by the side of a small lake literally in front of our home talking about rubbish being dumped in the water bodies all over Jabalpur. Once renowned for its water bodies, the only name of those remain postal addresses. I had my camera with me because my dad wanted me to click a photo of him with his friend. I have been photographing, watching and observing   Common Kingfisher छोटा किलकिला, राम चिरैया, शरीफन, निता मछराला (Alcedo atthis)   for almost 8 years now. Over this time I have learned a few facts, observed some interesting behavior, and read a lot. Both sexes of  Common Kingfisher  look very similar, females are slightly smaller than males. But the magic is in the mandible (bill or beak), males have all-black upper and lower mandibles while females have conspicuous orange lower mandibles.
