Egyptian Vultures are renowned for their tool-using ability. They have been observed using stones to break open large eggs, such as those of ostriches—a rare example of tool use among birds. Primarily scavengers, they feed on carrion, scraps, and even human refuse, playing a vital role in cleaning the environment.
In India, the Egyptian Vulture is widespread, often seen near villages, towns, and open countryside. It prefers semi-arid regions, farmlands, and rocky cliffs for nesting. Its adaptability allows it to live close to human settlements, where food sources are abundant.
Sadly, populations of Egyptian Vultures have declined sharply due to poisoning, habitat loss, and reduced food availability. They are currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Conservation efforts are crucial to protect this species, which has long been part of India’s natural heritage.
