The Black-headed Bunting breeds in southeastern Europe and western Asia, migrating to India, Pakistan, and Nepal during winter. In India, it is commonly seen in open fields, grasslands, and agricultural landscapes, especially in wheat-growing regions. Its Hindi names गेंहू चिड़िया and गंदम directly connect it to these farmlands, where flocks forage for grains and seeds.
This bunting is highly gregarious, often forming large flocks that feed together on the ground. It has a cheerful, sparrow-like call and is constantly active, hopping and fluttering among crops. During migration, it travels long distances, covering thousands of kilometers to reach the Indian subcontinent.
