Common Whitethroat श्वेत कंठ पिद्दी (Sylvia communis) were once very abundant and found in area of scrub, droughts in the Sahel region of Africa have caused massive population decline. The Sahel, the vast semi-arid region of Africa separating the Sahara Desert to the north and tropical savannas to the south. Their numbers have never recovered from the drought provoked decline. The most dramatic was a 75% drop in numbers in 1969 (source: RSPB).
Common Whitethroat श्वेत कंठ पिद्दी (Sylvia communis) are common summer visitors in the UK; they winter in tropical Africa. Whitethroat is a long-tailed warbler with broad rusty-brown fringes to wing feathers, pale base to the bill and yellow-brown legs. Male in spring has grey head with white eye-ring and reddish eye, pinkish breast and contrasting white throat; often pugged out. Female and immatures are dullerr, with les conspicuous eye-ring, head and breast washed brown and less contrasting off-white throat.
