Birds Around Me 0159 - Siskin (Carduelis spinus)
Siskin (Carduelis spinus)
Taken on January 7, 2018
Location: Stocker's Lake, Rickmansworth, UK (Latitude: 51.629534, Longitude: -0.493065)
Noisy, flashy, sociable small finches are Siskin. They are similar to Greenfinches but smaller and can be distinctively identified with forked-tail. You can see flash of yellow and green when it flies, similar to Greenfinch. Siskin rely on seeds and their large bills allow them to be able to eat a wide variety.
The photograph in this post was clicked when a flock of around 40 Siskin was feasting on a very cold and windy afternoon. I wasn't able to identify these birds initially and thought of these as Greenfinch, was corrected by fellow birders on Twitter. It was first time I photographed these beautiful birds.
Siskin (Carduelis spinus) is my 159th on Birds Around Me list, a new birds on the list on first day of birding in 2018.
