Birds Around Me 0010 - Goldcrest (Regulus regulus)
Weighing less than 6 grams, the Goldcrest (Regulus regulus) is the smallest bird of Britain and the Western Palearctic. The fiery yellow-orange stripe on the head of this grey bird makes it amazing. You can hear its high-pitched call from the top of the trees, and at times can be seen hovering to pick insects from the branches of trees. Interestingly, the nest is a spherical cup made of cobwebs, moss, and hair. The nest is usually suspended in twigs near the end of a conifer branch.
Goldcrest (Regulus regulus)
Taken on November 26, 2016
Location: RSPB Rye Meads, UK (Latitude: 51.775243, Longitude: 0.009284)
I have personally found it very challenging to photograph this bird. I see this bird almost on every walk in the UK, but hardly able to get a good shot with my kit. The photograph in this post was taken when a Goldcrest (Regulus regulus) was around for more than 15 minutes, hopping and hovering on a grey day.
