Asian Pied Starling (अबलक मैना, सिरोली मैना) - Gracupica contra
The pied
myna or Asian pied starling (Gracupica contra) is a species of
starling found in the Indian subcontinent. They are usually found in small
groups mainly on the plains and low foothills. They are often seen within
cities and villages although they are not as bold as the Common Myna.
The
picture in this post was taken in Jabalpur. You can see these noisy birds in hundreds early in the morning and towards the dawn.
The ability of these birds to mimic human voices is quite amazing and made them popular as cage birds. In some cultures Asian Pied Starling is considered as the reincarnation of ancestors.
