The Northern Plains Gray Langur (Semnopithecus entellus)  लंगूर, हनुमान लंगूर , also known as the Hanuman Langur, holds deep significance in Hindu mythology, particularly due to its association with Lord Hanuman, the revered monkey deity.

Hanuman and the Langurs

  • Symbol of Devotion & Strength: Hanuman, a central figure in the epic Ramayana, is known for his unwavering devotion to Lord Rama and his immense strength. Langurs, resembling Hanuman, are often seen as symbols of loyalty, courage, and protection. Langurs were Hanuman’s army, aiding Rama in his quest to rescue Sita from Ravana.
  • Sacred Status: Due to this connection, langurs are respected and protected in many parts of India. They are often fed by devotees near temples and allowed to roam freely.
  • Temple Presence: Many temples dedicated to Hanuman have langur statues or even real langurs living nearby, reinforcing their spiritual significance.

These langurs are often treated with reverence, and harming them is considered inauspicious.
