Birds Around Me 0176 - Rufous-tailed Lark (Ammomanes phoenicura) खेतरिया

The Rufous-tailed Lark, known in Hindi as खेतरिया, is a familiar bird of India’s farmlands and open country. Despite its modest appearance, this lark is a resilient survivor, perfectly adapted to the dry plains and agricultural landscapes where it thrives.

This small, stocky bird measures about 14–15 cm in length. Its plumage is earthy brown, blending seamlessly with the soil and stubble of fields. The most distinctive features are its rufous tail, conical bill, and brown breast, which help in identification. Its camouflage is so effective that you often notice it only when it suddenly takes off from the ground as you approach.

The Rufous-tailed Lark is found throughout India, especially in dry open fields, scrublands, and semi-arid regions. It is commonly seen in pairs, perched on small mounds or slightly elevated ground, scanning the surroundings. Its preference for open country makes it a regular companion to farmers and villagers.

This lark feeds mainly on seeds and small insects, foraging on the ground with its strong bill. During sowing seasons, it is often disliked by farmers, along with sparrows, starlings, and other finches, for feeding on freshly sown seeds. Its flight is swift and low, and its call is a soft, musical note. In the breeding season, males perform aerial displays, rising and fluttering while singing before descending to the ground.

The Hindi name खेतरिया reflects its close association with fields (khet). Though considered a nuisance by farmers, it plays an important ecological role by controlling insect populations and adding to the biodiversity of rural landscapes.  The Rufous-tailed Lark is a bird of the soil—humble, well-camouflaged, and deeply tied to India’s farmlands.
